🔍 Look Closely at Shapes

Some shapes are round and curved. Others have straight sides, corners and points to count.

🔷 Look for Shapes Everywhere

Simple shapes appear in toys, food, objects and patterns. Look closely and see what you can recognize.

Circles Are Round

A circle has one smooth curved edge and no corners. A round clothing button is an easy place to notice a circular shape.

The button in our circle coloring page also has smaller round holes. One large circle can contain several smaller circles inside it.

Squares Have Four Equal Sides

A square has four straight sides of equal length and four corners. A square-shaped gift box can make the shape easy to recognize.

Ribbons can cross the front of the box and divide the large square into smaller coloring sections without hiding its overall shape.

Rectangles Can Be Long or Tall

A rectangle has four straight sides and four corners. Opposite sides are equal in length.

A chocolate bar can have a long rectangular outline. The smaller chocolate sections inside can create a repeating pattern of straight lines.

Three Sides Make a Triangle

A triangle has three straight sides and three corners. Triangles can point upward, downward or in another direction.

A pizza slice can have a broad edge near the crust and two sides that narrow toward a point, creating a familiar triangular shape.

An Ellipse Is Like an Oval

An ellipse is a smooth curved shape. In everyday descriptions, people often use the word oval for shapes that look long and rounded.

An oval hand mirror can help show the shape clearly. The outer frame and the mirror inside can repeat the same elongated curved form.

Five Sides Make a Pentagon

A pentagon is a shape with five straight sides. The five sides meet to create five corners.

Place a smaller pentagon inside a larger pentagon and connect their corners. Simple shapes can be repeated to make a new geometric design.

Hexagons Fit Together

A hexagon has six straight sides. Hexagons can fit beside one another without leaving spaces between them.

A honeycomb pattern is a familiar place to notice repeating six-sided cells. In the coloring page, seven connected hexagons create a simple pattern.

A Semicircle Is Half a Circle

A semicircle has one straight edge and one curved edge. Imagine dividing a circle into two equal halves across its center.

A simple rainbow arch can repeat semicircular curves. Several nested bands create broad spaces for different colors.

Look at a Trapezoid

A trapezoid is a four-sided shape. In our coloring page, the shape has a shorter top edge, a longer bottom edge and two outward-sloping sides.

A lampshade can have a similar outline. The shape becomes wider as it moves from the top toward the bottom.

Hearts, Stars and Crescents

Some familiar shapes are recognized more by their overall outline than by counting straight sides.

A heart-shaped balloon has rounded upper curves and a pointed bottom. A five-pointed star has broad points, while a crescent is formed by two sweeping curved arcs.

A Diamond-Shaped Kite

Young learners often call a familiar four-sided pointed shape a diamond. A kite can have this easy-to-recognize outline.

Straight frame lines inside the kite can divide the diamond shape into smaller triangular coloring sections.

Find Shapes Around You

Look around your room, kitchen or playground. Can you find something circular, rectangular or triangular?

Color a shape, look at the object beside it and then try to find another object with a similar shape. Shapes are hiding almost everywhere.
